Last night I found myself standing in the procrastinator's line at the post office. The majority of the people who were mailing in their checks for the state department of revenue wrestled with the stamp printing machine, trying to figure out what kind of printed stamp to buy in order to receive the "postmark" of the 15th of April. Three different people tried three different options, running up small bills on their credit cards before they figured out which option was the correct one.
As the line grew longer and began to snake around the lobby, one might have expected an attitude of grief or anxiety to pervade the atmosphere. A funny thing happened, though. Among the folks waiting in line as the seconds turned to minutes and quarter hours and so on, jokes about the drabness of color on the walls or the need for a clown or balloons began to bubble up. No one was impatient with anyone else. And when the discovery was made regarding which option was necessary to get the date printed on the stamp, great rejoicing erupted. The person who made the discovery, (with the help of at least three other people looking at the screen with them) was so delighted that they had finally figured out the system, they stayed to help nearly half a dozen other people behind them so the process could move faster from there.
We discovered that you had to buy three stamps at a time, so those who had only one or two envelopes that needed the date-stamped postage shared with those who had been standing in line behind them. Wishing one another a "happy tax day", we worked together to lift one another's moods and each person in the line helped the person or two behind them to navigate the silly machine. I was struck by the presence of the joy and compassion in that small, whitewashed government office. Christ is sometimes found in the most unlikely of places. For me, on tax day, Christ was found in the little post office in my hometown.
Ah, Beloved,
You have a way of popping up unexpectedly. Your Spirit of compassion is present in places we might not think to look for Her. Surely you surprise us with your grace when we least expect it to come our way. During this Holy Week, I pray that everyone might catch a reflection of You in our fellow human beings, in the love of our animals or in the glory of your creation. May we all be captivated by your Spirit of grace and compassion, and may we strive to make Her presence felt more palpably everywhere we go, in Jesus' name, amen.
Here you'll find the ponderings, prayers, reflections and visions of a seminary graduate seeking to understand, and to walk in, the way of the Christ. If you share my work or photos, please remember to cite your source. I'll do the same for you. Thank you.

Morning Coffee
Beloved,
Today the sun shines brightly here in the Pacific Northwest, and the wind cuts cold, slicing through the hand-made cap upon my head, finding just the right pathway through the neckline of my jacket in order to touch that shoulder that aches a bit when the seasons change. So, I bundle up a little tighter, pour myself a cup of coffee and wrap up in a thick blanket to sit on the patio rocking chair to listen to the birds sing the last few praises before they travel south to avoid the winter storms. I can see my breath. Steam from my coffee fogs up my glasses.
Breathing in deeply, I feel the cold air rush into my lungs. It remains there, pausing for a long moment, growing warmer as oxygen moves into my bloodstream. Taking its place, the toxins, the used energy, are returned to my core. The chill has completely dissipated. I exhale slowly, wondering if you can feel what I feel, and see what I can see.
The branches of the trees in the green space are now exposed. Waving proudly in their nakedness, they are not ashamed. If only I could be so bold!
My lips have lost their moisture now - stolen by the frigid wind - that rascally thief! The warm liquid soothes them, if only for a moment. My coffee is losing its comforting properties to the same bandit that wicked away the softness of my skin. I do not care. I am here with you. For this moment, that is enough.

A Pleasant Pumpkin Day

My guitar was left at home for my kitty to curl up with and I was off to hang out with the wonderful Unitarian Universalist Senior High Youth I co-advise this year. We carved pumpkins and talked about Halloween traditions and family endeavors. The group joyfully welcomed a new friend into our midst and got our hands quite dirty!

Deep belly laughter filled our afternoon together, and then we returned to our church for worship team practice. Later we had the sanctuary to ourselves, just us and our Beloved. I played my guitar and my husband played the drum set. We played with all of our might - a wonderful gift of freedom since we usually practice our music in our apartment and are always considerate of our neighbors. Body, mind and spirit were united in glorious, freeing worship together.
Your Spirit, Beloved, was palpably present with us today. I am deeply thankful. I am truly blessed.

Wild Waves & Soothing Sands: Trysting with Beloved at the Coast
"Crashing Wave Untamed" - Photo by Trista Wynne
Thank You for meeting me at the beach this afternoon! Thank You for this secluded spot -- a little nesting area for You and me to share. Thank You for the sound of the ocean, the rhythm of the waves, the cleansing and peace that comes from being so close to the edge of unharnessed waters.
Oh, what a tryst we had! You are indeed my First Love! I long for you unceasingly. When I get a little taste, all I can think of is when I can next receive the falernum nobele, the very best of wines, from Your navel again.
Your left arm rests under my head; Your right arm encircles me once more.

Earnest Anticipation & Fulfillment of Lifelong Dreams
I have earnestly longed to share this meal with you!
These are Jesus' words as he lifted the bread above His precious head during the final Passover meal of his ministry. These are the words I will speak early tomorrow morning as I lift the bread and wine at the altar in Murrayhills Christian Church.
How long I have waited to share this meal with you! I have dreamed of this very moment from the time I was three years old.
This is what has been going through my mind ever since I was asked to lead communion and to speak the words of institution over the bread and wine on this day. I have an almost child-like giddiness bubbling up within my spirit as I contemplate the honor I have been given by being asked to preside at the Table. Like the great women of old: Miriam, the first worship leader of Israel after the Exodus; Hannah, the barren woman giving thanks for the gift of a child of promise and prophecy; and Mother Mary, giving thanks for the salvation of all humankind, my spirit is filled with songs of praise and joy at the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
As I pray and consider the Scriptures etched in my heart, my imagination fills out what might have been going through Jesus' mind, the things He wanted to say but couldn't for one reason or another, on that evening so many years ago...
You don't yet know the importance of this meal. You've been celebrating it all your lives, and yet the Spirit of God still has more light to shed on your hearts and minds. Our Beloved in Heaven is working, even in this very moment, to bring the Kingdom of Peace and Love to the earth through you. And it starts here, with this bread, with this wine, with the sharing of this meal. The Kingdom of God begins with you.

Tears, Fears & Pondering the big "D"
4 a.m. -- Woke up from a nightmare about my parents' death. Tears are flowing freely...
My dream brings a number of questions to light. Like, who do you call, exactly, when your parents both have DNR wishes? Do you still call 9-1-1 and have them send the police and a coroner? Which pastor do I call? (Mine or theirs? Both?) What about their pets? Who do I call to take care of them? How do I manage the situation if I have the kiddos I nanny with me? (We all go visit them a couple times a week.) How do I contact my family members? How do you share something like that over the phone?
Who am I in this situation? Daughter? Chaplain? Will my family look to me for spiritual guidance? Will my pastoral presence matter to them? Will I be so overwhelmed with grief that I can be of no help to them? Will they resent me for that later?
I guess we all have to deal with questions like these sooner or later. Now is simply my time. I'm mentally preparing and processing in the dark of the night. Fear, I realize, has very little to do with the reality that they might pass from this life to the next at any point. The part of the dream that made it nightmarish was my anxiety about the "what next" or "what now" questions swirling about. I post because I figure that gaining some insight will help to calm those fears. Then I will feel more prepared when the time comes...

Signs of New Life
Beloved ~
As we journey through the middle of the winter time, I have found it hard to remember the light of your love. My soul has often felt like it was swirling in a thick fog or meandering about in the darkness, lacking direction and confidence. Such have the months been since graduating from seminary and asking what is next. Here, though, in these last few days, it seems that your Spirit has been stirring and opening new doors. I have now sold my second painting: "The Tree of Life". A shining reminder that You are in the midst of making all things new, I feel like you have affirmed my pathway of artistic and creative endeavors. I am filled with peace.
Painting, "The Tree of Life" by Trista Wynne
The questions remain, but at least I don't feel like You are very far away. Even if I have to continue waiting, I am comforted in the reminder that You are here, in the shadows and fog. You are watching and waiting right alongside of me.
Perhaps that is the reminder that you gave during the epiphany so many years ago -- a sign of your love and light, your very Presence wrapped in human flesh, shining in the midst of the dark night. You are not so very far from any of us, are you? For all of these signs of new light and life, thank you.

In the Midst of the Wailing in Ramah
Today, at the church we are attending, the annual children's pageant took the place of the sermon. I'm sure it's been planned for months to have the children lead the Sunday where we light a candle for Joy, but the timing, in light of the recent tragedies both here in Portland and in Connecticut, was uncanny. The children were the only ones who could bring joy to the service today...
I will confess that the children's voices were not all perfectly on pitch. Some of the angels lost their halos or had their wings turned sideways or upside down. One of the kings nearly lost their treasure as they fumbled with the long robes on the steps. And yet, it was all perfect.
As the young child playing Mary cradled the Jesus doll in her arms, and the older child playing Joseph helped her lay the doll in the manger, my mind was taken back to the story of old. While shepherds and astrologers and angels rubbed elbows and tried to stay balanced near the altar, an older elementary child held up a gigantic star high for the congregation to see. And I was very moved.
Tears stung my eyes as the children sang "Joy to the World" as only they can. And then their time in the front was done. They took their seats to the sound of a collective deep breath. We had all been moved, for the Spirit of God was present.
A recent seminary graduate proclaimed the Lord's presence and invited us to the Great Table where all are welcome. We shared a lengthy time of silence, and I wondered how many people were thinking about the time of Jesus' birth and the darker side of the wise men narrative...

A Note of Gratitude
Beloved,
I want to express my gratitude for Your Presence this weekend. As I traveled north for a couple of days, You used the time to clear the air. You filled my lungs with the Breath of Your Spirit and wrapped Your arms about me through the embraces from my brothers and sisters in Christ.
I am incredibly thankful for this breath of fresh air and the peace You gave me during this time. I am filled with joy in the presence of my brother and sisters who have prayed with me for many years. Snuggling on the couch, mulling over the life questions, wondering together what You are in the midst of doing in our lives, and allowing the questions to linger -- without simple platitudes or easy answers, without context-less Scripture passages and promises that have no backing -- simply listening together to Your silence. That is exactly what I needed.
I am thankful.
For the music and the prayers and the welcome of my St Thomas family, for the love and the joy and the smiles, for the way You met me in the bread and the wine and the arms of my brothers and sisters, I am very thankful. I wept with joy at the Eucharist table. My spirit danced in the midst of the crowd. I could have sprouted wings and flown to the rooftops in the breaking of bread and pouring forth of the wine.
Thank You for meeting me there.
Thank You for bringing me home.
Thank You.
Thank You.
Thank You.

Within our Darkest Night
Beloved,
I continue to experience the dark night of the soul. Little has any draw or appeal. I eat because my body makes me, not because it is at all desirable. I move and get out of bed because I am needed. But I have no oomph. My spark, my fire, is flickering as though in a violent wind.
Can anyone help to lift the burden of despair this morning? You, O Lord, know. And what of the sea of emotion churning so rapidly within? How can words begin to express them? They are nonsensical. And so is the task of attempting to articulate them...
*sigh*
I wish I could feel Your Presence, Dear One. Today I feel far from you. I trust that You are near, but something is in the way of my hearing of your heartbeat.
Clear the air, Beloved. Until I can see, hear, smell and feel You again I will wait. I wait and watch for the light of the Dawn.

What Does it Mean to Trust You?
Beloved,
One of my dear friends recently shared how difficult it is to trust You, especially in times of transition. This one does believe that things will work out and has experienced your faithfulness and provision on several occasions and yet still finds it difficult to trust. This friend is not alone. Countless others have conversed with me about the difficulty they have trusting You. For many, it's easier to not believe that You exist at all than it is to examine what it means when we use the phrase, "God is good".
Like my friend and countless others, I, too, have difficulty trusting You. It is hard to admit that at the end of my seminary studies I may be no closer to comprehension or faith or trust than I was at the beginning.
Something, however, has shifted. This time of study, of fellowship, of exploration of Your Community -- it has shifted my perspective. As of yet, I cannot articulate how.

Dreaming of Home
Then I considered all that...hands had done
and the toil...spent in doing it,
all was vanity and a chasing after wind,
and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.

Yesterday, in the wee hours of the morning, I dreamed that my husband and I were looking for an apartment complex, looking for a home where we belonged.
We began near many large, elegant looking buildings where sports cars gleamed and jewels were strewn about well-manicured lawns. Gardeners baked in the sun. Maids wilted on front porches. Striving, oppression and emptiness were there.
We drove to the darker side of town. Oil can fires burned bright. Dogs barked and fought. Distant sounds children wailing echoed off the barren walls. Striving, oppression and emptiness were there.
The road curved. Nearing a forested area with deer peacefully enjoying their bits of grass, we came to a stop by a little apartment housing made of dark, well-weathered cherry-wood. The keys were drawn from the ignition and our feet reached for the bark chips on the ground. Hand reached for hand. There we stood, taking in the serenity around us. We breathed in deeply and walked towards the buildings for a closer look.

A Cry for Justice, Mercy & Steadfast Love
God,
Why do You allow the torture, abuse, rape and disposal of Your children?! Why are Your poor creatures going through the same without a voice?! What were You thinking when You put humans in charge? We have ruined Your good creation while You keep Yourself at a distance remaining safe and untouched.
Where are You?!
Why don't You intervene? Will You look upon the plight of the poor, the child, the victim, the animal and take notice of them? Or will You ignore our cries for yet another generation?
Rouse Yourself! Wake up! Turn and see and hear! Come to rescue us from one another! Come and rescue us from ourselves!

Growing in the Light
Hello, Beloved.
My heart is much more at peace this evening than it was just a couple of days ago. You have granted a good sliver of sunshine both days, and I was able to get out and walk without a sweatshirt for three days in a row, at least for a while. I look forward to having several days in a row where I won't even think about putting on a sweatshirt or sweater. Perhaps those days are not so very far away.

A Child's Eucharistic Celebration
Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all
your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am
commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about
them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you
rise. Bind them as
a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead,
and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your
gates. (Deut. 6:4-9)
This morning, the preschooler that I nanny, who has just celebrated his third birthday, celebrated his first Eucharist. We weren't in a church building. There wasn't a lot of music or long prayers or chanting. Instead, his father and I were eating breakfast with him and watching the birds outside the window.

A Lovely Visit
Beloved,
You have created us to be in community, to find friends and to be in relationship with other human beings. I am so blessed to have been visited by one of your beautiful daughters this afternoon. In all the months that it has been since my husband and I have been away from the church we attended for several years, this was the first time that one of the congregants have contacted us directly and asked to simply get together. What a joy it was to have her over! And what a delightful surprise for her to bring me flowers and cookies, too!

Summertime Serenity
Beloved,
As I delight in the freedom that comes from accomplishing all that needed to be done before the end of the term, I also bask in the light of the sunshine. Thank You, dear Lord, for this vibrantly beautiful day! Thank you for the stretching kitties basking in the light. Thank You for the fluttering sparrows and burrowing bunnies that my neighbor and I saw on our walk today.

Palms, Presence and Unexpected Joy
Ah Beloved,
Thank You for Your presence at the chapel this morning! Sophia-Spirit, You flowed through the message and music, speaking to my husband and I both in ways that were unexpected and surprising. We entered that place feeling a little awkward, but soon felt welcomed. Since the worshipping area was close to the front doors, it was easy to see where to go, and the combination of worship and arts was clearly evident from the beginning. Both of these things were very appealing to us.
There were a few things that made me think I’d rather go elsewhere, like the loudness of the music and the strange placement of the early offering. For the first half of the message, I felt like I was listening to one of my brothers tell a story. The pastor jumped all over the place, citing Bible passages from Hebrews, Philippians, Genesis, Jonah and John. My mind was a metal bal inside a pinball machine! But then, somewhere about two-thirds of the way in, the pastor suddenly seemed to connect with Your Spirit of Peace, and clarity came. The last portion of the sermon was poignant, and exactly what we needed to hear today.
Then we prayed the prayer that You taught Your disciples, and many hands around us were lifted. Your Presence was tangibly felt, and complete surrender fell upon everyone in the crowd. In those moments following the sermon and the prayer, the room seemed to vibrate with energy, and then, when the band began to play, every hair on my body stood on end. I don’t think a single person stood still in that room. We couldn’t! You were there! My husband’s hand met mine, and we were practically elevated off the floor! What energy!
What a gift! What an unexpected gift! Ah, Beloved King of kings, how awesome it was to worship you in a way that used our entire being! To sing to you with the kind of music that naturally makes us want to dance fully connects our heads, hearts and bodies in worship. We were so blessed to receive Your Presence today. And I am humbled, because You came and met us where we least expected it. The theology at that church is very different than mine, and they have restrictive burdens that I feel are highly unnecessary, but even there You are working.

You come where we least expect You, and You act in loving kindness, granting Your Presence even to those who do not understand. I suppose this unexpected Presence is what Palm Sunday is all about, for You entered Jerusalem not as the messiah hell-bent on war and overthrowing the oppressive powers, but as the gentle King of the Universe, humble and riding on a donkey. You came in peace, knowing that You had the rest of eternity to make all things right. Your presence then came as a surprise, even to those who knew You best; so it is even today.
Blessed King, may we be continually surprised by Your loving kindness for all of creation, and may we do our best to reflect this same unrequited love to all, amen.

Hope & Healing on the Horizon: Reflecting the Day to Come in the Present Day
Blessed Creator, Lover Divine ~
Thank You for the gifts of music, rhythm, friendship, connection, creativity and ingenuity! Each of these have played significant roles throughout this weekend. The haunting melodies of the women’s choir on Friday, the heartbeat rhythm of the sacred drumming circle Saturday and the fluttering of the violin strings from the service this morning all ebb and flow together in my spirit’s inner ear. For these sounds, I am very grateful.
These last three days have filled me with joy and left me hungry for more: more music, more mystery, more marvelous connections with You, Your creation and Your peoples! Lord, in all of these things I find myself drinking deeply from Your wellspring of life and desiring more of You. What joys I discover, both inside and outside of the Church, and what a palpable sense of Your presence I feel! Where could I go where You are not present? In the adoration from a young child, in the whispering wind in the willow, in the purr of our warm kitties, You are there. In the thundering rainstorm, in the calm that follows, in the gentle caress of a passionate lover, You are there. And even in the times when we do not know, perhaps most especially in the places we least expect, You, Beloved, are there.
I consider the times of abandonment, where waves of loss, anger, shame or abuse overshadow the love and light that You desire to share. There are horrors in this world that we would rather not know, or see, or imagine, or remember, but even in these times and places, You are there. How You are working to heal the wounds which scar us all, we cannot always see or know, but still You are there. Why some people die and others remain, we do not always understand, but still, O Lord, You are there. And why some tyrants lead for so long or corruption seems so rampant, we cannot fathom, but even there, even in those times, You are there.
You are there, but You are not silent. You are there, but You do not remain hidden. In the midst of our deepest trials: the shaking of the earth, the desolation of Your planet, the cruel treatment of our loved ones, in these times You are actively working to plant seeds of new life. Seeds of hope begin to sprout, desire for life and peace rises, and Your Sophia-Spirit breathes afresh into all of these situations. Even now She is working to bring forth assurance that Your creation is not forsaken, but in the process of being made new. She grants us visions of justice, of mercy, of peace and provision for all through the love which finds its origins in Jesus.
In the midst of the direst of circumstances, You, O Lord, are present and working to prepare the way for Your new Day, a day we can only imagine in part. You have given us glimpses through simple and complex word-pictures granted through Your prophets old and new. Despite their words, we sometimes forget the hope of what is yet to come. We neglect to actively shape our present reality to reflect Your Kingdom on the earth. Forgive us, renew us, and grant us the courage and wisdom to fully live the lives You gave to us, and to walk in Your way of love, mercy, justice and provision for all.
Ah, Beloved, Your active and creative Sophia-Spirit became clearly evident in Biblical times. May we all learn to be receptive to Her movements today. May we become active reflections of Your new creation in the midst of our present reality. May we seek Your presence of Love and Grace and Peace and Truth wherever You may be found. And may we all come to know how intimately we are connected with one another, with Your creation, and with You through Jesus the Lover of all, amen.

Butterflies, Sunshine & Wide-Eyed Anticipation: Watching for New Life in Lent
Precious Beloved ~
Originally I had a fairly clear plan as to what I would do today, but I was willing to let go of my preconceived ideas of what the day would hold, and the entire day has been tremendously blessed. I trust that this is indicative of my lifelong journey as well, and at this time, of my worship life as we approach this new endeavor and unanticipated pathway. Your Holy Spirit blows where She will, and all I can do is be willing to watch for signs of Her action in the people, earth and creation around me, and to listen to my heart's response in order to find where I am called.
This is what journeying through Lent is all about -- releasing our ideas about what should happen and allowing You to work as You so desire. In Christ we see Your heart, O God! Through the promptings of Sophia-Spirit, all of our theological assertions and analogies simply fall to the ground like the palm branches of holy week; they are trampled so that the seeds of love might be pressed into the ground and a new creation can spring forth as we declare, "Hosanna".
Today, although I had distinct plans of where I would go and to whom I would speak, You, Beloved, had a different idea, and I am so very glad that You did. Through the unanticipated conversations, the blessed sunshine and the wild weather that followed, Your presence was truly palpable. What a lovely tryst it was!
As I grabbed my camera and sprung out into the delightfully sunny afternoon, I had the butterflies in my belly of a young lover who catches a glimpse of the one they long for more than life itself. I thought I might burst with joy and anticipation of the coming thing! Whatever was coming, I knew it was going to be tremendous. So I found the quickest way to enter the garden to capture the radiant reflections of Your glory which infuses each flower with beauty. I could hardly remain in my seat for the car ride, and virtually leapt forth onto the nature trails to soak in Your light.
My mind feels like the earth which is in the midst of being pushed aside for new life to spring forth, and every fiber of my being vibrates with songs of delight. What is this new creation that I sense is coming? What sort of new life will spring forth within, through or around me? Like a child nearing their birthday, or a lover who has been asked to cover their eyes, I wonder, and I yearn, and I dance while I wait.
The storm clouds roll in and rain pours down but still I watch and I dance and I wait. Lightning flashes and thunder sounds, and yet I watch, I dance and I wait. Snow flurries swirl and darkness flows around, and still I watch, I dance and I wait. What is this new life about to spring forth? In Lent, I watch, I dance and I wait.
